WILDLIFE OF YELLOWSTONE

One of the things we wanted to see as much as the scenery was as many different animals
as possible, particularly bear and moose. The problem is most animals are trying not to be seen.

You can always tell if there is an animal sighting near the road because cars are abandoned in the middle
of the road, all four doors left open, and everyone is running in the same direction. Not the wilderness
experience we hoped for, but we saw some pretty interesting things.

BIson and elk are plentiful and easy to spot. On our first day in the park we came
across these young bull elk locking horns over a disinterested female nearby.

Off the same road we spotted these otters playing in a stream

We are guessing this is an immature bald eagle.
He is alone and somewhat smaller than the
mated pairs we saw.

We were told this is a pika

There are an estimated 4900 bison in the Yellowstone area. A bull like this weighs 2000 lbs., is
tempremental and can run 30 mph. It is amazing how willing some people are to antagonize them.

Mature bulls seem to enjoy walking slowly down the middle of the road blocking traffic for
as long as they wish. We watched one confront an RV that attempted to push past him.
