We left Louisville and made
brief stops at
Fort Knox and Mammoth Cave
The gold depository, or "Bullion Bldg"
The gold depository at Fort Knox is a few
hundred yards from the highway and the
gate to the fort is a 1/4 mile further.
The cameras on the depository obviously caught
us taking pictures, and when we arrived
at the gate the guard was going crazy.
Apparently, anyone with a drivers license
can drive through the gate and wander around the base
(which is primarily a weapons dump), but
it is a violation of federal law to photograph the gate.
At Mammoth Cave we felt much more secure
with the
young ranger in the big hat than the lunatic
at the gate.
The cave was too dark and too mammoth to
photograph effectively.
