GREAT WALL
Built along an east-to-west line across
the historical northern borders of China in part to protect
the Chinese Empire against intrusions
by various nomadic groups. Several walls were being built
as early as the 7th century BC.
The majority of the existing wall is from the Ming Dynasty.
A comprehensive archaeological survey,
using advanced technologies, has concluded
that the Ming walls measure 8,850 km (5,500
mi)
We first had to take a gondola to the wall.
It is impossible to show here how really
breathtaking the wall is.
These men were hired to carry material
for repairs to the wall.
The donkey followed a path adjacent to
the wall, and the men carried the material
a greater distance to where it was needed.
The grade is steep and the
climb is challenging empty handed.
